Jose Mourinho confirms that Manchester United want to sign Alvaro Morata but concedes a deal is now unlikely
Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Manchester United want to sign Alvaro Morata this summer but admits that a deal is now looking unlikely.
The Spanish forward has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer as the Portuguese coach prepares for his second season in charge at the club.
However, Manchester United eventually turned towards Romelu Lukaku after failing to agree a fee with Real Madrid for the 24-year-old Morata.
Mourinho has now confirmed that he is a keen admirer of the Spanish forward, having worked with him during his spell in charge at Real Madrid.
However, the Portuguese coach has appeared to hint that a deal for Morata is now off the table after Manchester United failed to settle on a fee with the Spanish club.
Mourinho is quoted as saying by BBC Sport: “It is a shame.
“He is a player who made it to the first team with me and I have a special liking for. I enjoyed watching his evolution in Juventus and Madrid.
“But we have not reached an agreement with his club and I don’t think he can end with us.”
The Red Devils confirmed the signing of striker Lukaku from Everton last week as their second recruit of the summer.
Manchester United are preparing for their second season under Mourinho after he led them back into the Champions League following their Europa League triumph last term.
