ARLINGTON -- The Rangers, 5 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot in the American League, began unloading veterans on Sunday by sending catcher Jonathan Lucroy to Colorado for a player to be named.
Lucroy, who will become a free agent after this season, joined the Rangers at the trade deadline last season along with reliever Jeremy Jeffress from Milwaukee for two top prospects: center fielder Lewis Brinson and right-hander Luis Ortiz.
Lucroy played well last season but tailed off this year, hitting .242 and having defensive problems. The Rangers had 36 wild pitches in 578 innings with Lucroy and 13 wild pitches in 346 1/3 innings with Robinson Chirinos.
"This is an opportunity for Chirinos and Brett Nicholas to play more, and for us to add young talent to the organization," general manager Jon Daniels said.
The no-waivers trade deadline arrives on Monday at 3 pm. An official with another major-league club said on Sunday that the Rangers area disappointed in the quality of offers received for their most attractive trade candidate: right-hander Yu Darvish. They have contacted smaller-market clubs such as Cleveland to tell them their best might be good enough.
Darvish can become a free agent after the season. Teams will give up less for a rental than a player whom they can keep under control for several seasons.
The Rangers list Darvish and right-hander Andrew Cashner, who is also attracting interest, as their starters for Tuesday and Wednesday against Seattle. They have set a contingency play should Darvish or Cashner be traded.
Right-hander A.J. Griffin ready is ready to step into the rotation. Griffin was scheduled to throw about 90 pitches in an injury-rehabilitation appearance with Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday. The Rangers changed plans and had Griffin work two innings, throwing 40 pitches, so that he can start on short notice.
